23 people were arrested on 15th of October, 2013 for ticket racketeering. They were grabbed by the Ghana police when they were illegally selling the tickets of the match between the blackstars of Ghana and their Egyptian counterpart at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi.
The spokesperson of the Ashanti regional division of the Ghana police, ASP Tanko said on Kessben fm’s ‘midfield action’,” The negative experience we had was the issue of ticket racketeering. We [Police] realized four to five days to the match that tickets were very hard to come by”. “At around 8:00am [15th October, 2013] we got information that some individuals were selling the tickets [Ghana Vs Egypt] at high prices; at two or three times beyond their normal prices. We sent investigators and they made 23 arrests”, He explained.
It is now a practice that certain individuals buy large quantities of match day tickets involving the Blackstars of Ghana causing scarcity and depriving willing fans from gaining access to the tickets. These individuals later sell the tickets twice and in certain cases even thrice the amount of the original price of the tickets making abnormal profits.
It was revealed that, some of those arrested got those large quantities of tickets from some media houses and the National Sports Council. ASP Tanko said further investigations will be conducted and appropriate actions will be taken against all individuals involved.
