Two of the Ghana Premier League’s top side clash on Saturday lunch time when George Lamptey takes his 6th placed Liberty Professionals side to Kumasi to face early pacesetters Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
Both teams have tasted defeats in their opening nine fixtures and are separated by seven points, a victory for either side will therefore represent a big result
Both teams also have had a full week to prepare for the contest after Liberty who seems to have recovered from a shaky start to the season.
Liberty who comfortably defeated Edubiase last weekend will come into this game really confident and high in belief after an outstanding performance which catapulted them to 6th place with seven points adrift of Kotoko whereas Kotoko, who are in a strong position in the league and have a good opportunity at home to turn this around and have to respond well after they suffered a 2-0 defeat at away to Heart Of Lions.
The Scientific Soccer lads will be in Kumasi with in-form striker Michael Appiah , who so far has proved a great impart on the pitch with scored four goals, with all his goals coming in his last five appearance.
The former Asokwa Deportivo man is a complete, versatile striker armed with lethal shot and renowned for his impressive technique and creativity in winning balls.
Kotoko’s rearguard and midfield comprising of Akuffo and Jordan, who has already proved he still has the quality to operate at the highest level, will need to ensure he is not afforded any time or space on Saturday or it could be a long afternoon for the Porcupine Warriors.
Kotoko XI : Isaac Amoako – Amos Frimpong, Eric Donkor, Kwabena Adusei, Abeiku Ainoonson – Jordan Opoku, Michael Akuffo, Michael Helegbe, Richard Mpong – Yahaya Mohammed, Abdul Aziz
Liberty XI : Yaw Berko – Anthony Nimo, Alfred Nelson, Tuffour Emmanuel, Richard Antwi – Tuaha Sheikh, Daniel Kodieh, Latif Abubakar, Yaw Clevor – Louis Marfo, Michael Appiah
Recent Form: Last Five Matches
Kotoko: W W L W L
Liberty: L W W L W
An intriguing match which on paper should be a great contest full of attacking football , neat passing and goals. Liberty have been in scintillating form of late and will no doubt start the contest as favourite but Asante Kotoko have the quality to beat anyone on their day.
Both teams have had a relatively easy run of fixtures so far but this clash represents the beginning of a sustained period of difficult games which will go a long way to determining just how lofty their ambitions really are.
Getting something from the Baba Yara Stadium will be a great thing for Liberty but Kotoko will be dangerous after their defeat last weekend.
