WAFU CUP: Stars down Sierra Leone in opening fixture

The first match of the GOTV WAFU Cup began with a thrilling 4 – 1 win for Ghana  over Sierra Leone. The Stars had to rally from a goal down to keep top spot in group A.
Sierra Leone were ahead in the 10th minute after Kwanee Quee dribbled his way through the defence of the Stars, he had goalkeeper Foli Addade at his mercy and cooly slotted his shot past him. The Stars kept pushing but the attack led by Yahaya Mohammed failed to find the back of the net. Micheal Akuffo’s well taken goal drew the Stars level in the 25th minute.

The Black Stars lifted their game in the second half and soon doubled the lead through Theophilus Annorbah in the 46th minute. Coach Maxwell Konadu sought for reinforcement and  introduced Striker Sulley Mohammed, Jordan Opoku and Francis Adjei in the second half.

The excitement that began the second period was unrelenting, a quick break saw Latiff Abdul Mohammed beat goalkeeper Korona for the Stars third of the afternoon.

Sierra Leone were a man down in the 66th minute after defender Osman Camara was sent off for picking his second yellow card.

Heading into the final 20 minutes the Stars were in cruise control of the game jostling the Sierra Leoneans back and forth. They soon added their forth in the 70th minute through inform striker Sulley Mohammed.

Not only were the attackers brilliant, the defence men and midfielders were on full display as the game progressed.

The competition continues with Burkina Faso facing off against Benin.
