Ghana were crowned Champions of the WAFU Cup tournament on Thursday night, beating Senegal 3 – 1 in an incident filled game at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
Ghana were handed the early advantage in the 3rd minute when defender Sheik Wade heckled Sulley Mohammed in the penalty box. Kwabena Adusei calmly slotted the spot kick to hand Ghana the lead.
Senegal gradually warmed themselves into the game and soon pulled parity in the 22nd minute through captain Roger Gomis. Poor defending almost saw Senegal double their score but great work by Stephen Adams kept the game at 1 – 1.
Injuries forced Coach Maxwell Konadu to make two quick changes; injured Yahaya Mohammed and goalkeeper Stephen Adams were replaced by Micheal Akuffo and Foli Adade.
Ghana stepped up their performance in the second half making a lot of incursions in the opponents half. Latiff Abdul Mohammed scored Ghana’s second from close range tapping in Theophilus Annobarh’s pass.
Kwabena Adusei scored his second from the penalty spot to make it 3 – 1 for Ghana, a decision which did not sit well with the bench of the Senegalese.
Senegal defender Thioune stirred more controversy after he was sent off for a deliberate elbow on Abeiku Ainooson.
