The Black Stars on Saturday night suffered a 0-1 defeat to Holland in a pre-World Cup friendly at the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam.
Having got into Ghana’s faces from kick off, the Oranje went ahead through Captain Robben Van Persie who scored from a Wesley Sneijder lay off six minutes into the game.
Arjen Robben almost made it 2-0 for the home side in the 12th minute but the winger missed from close range. They continued to stamp their authority on proceedings as they moved forward in search of the second.
A sluggish Ghanaian defense failed to show energy and endeavor as they were on the back foot on numerous occasions in the opening exchanges. The team led by Micheal Essien begun to regroup and settle as the game progressed but failed to trouble Jasper Cillessen in goal for the Dutch.
Robben was unlucky as his long drive got parried away by Adam Kwarasey minutes before half time.
Ghana upped the performance after recess with the introduction of Afriyie Acquah, Kevin Prince Boateng and Majid Warris; the trio added urgency into the Stars approach with several incursions into the half of the home team.
The Stars, despite an improved performance in the second half failed to get the needed leveler; Andre Ayew came close for his side in the later exchanges but his low shot was blocked by a Dutch defender.
Jerry Akaminko late in the game picked up an injury following an awkward land after a mid-air challenge with Jeremy Lens, the defender looked to be in severe pain and was stretched off the pitch.
Coach Kwesi Appiah will learn a great deal from the defeat and will seek to remedy the team’s lapses before the global event.
Ghana will play South Korea in Miami on June 9 in the final tune-up.
