Christian Atsu scored the winner for the Black Stars at the AU Stade Du Kegue in Lome, to give Ghana a hard–fought 3-2 victory over the Hawks of Togo in their 2015 AFCON qualifier on Wednesday.
Ghana after a disappointing 1-1 display against the Cranes of Uganda put up a rather spirited display against the Togolese side.
Kwesi Appiah’s back four of Jonathan Mensah, Awal Mohammed, Baba Abdul Rahman and Harrison Afful managed to hold off pressure in the dying embers of the game from the Togolese attack spearheaded by Emmanuel Adebayor.
Jonathan Ayite in the 11th minute broke the deadlock as defence men of the Black Stars failed to clear their lines.
The lead proved short-lived as the Stars drew level in the 24th minute when Skipper Asamoah Gyan leaped to nod home a Kwadwo Asamoah cross.
Minutes later Baba Rahman provided a superb cross from the left and Agyeman Badu powered his well-timed header past Kossi Agassa in post for Togo.
Game ended 2-1 for the visitors at the interval.
After recess the atmosphere at the AU Stade Du Kegue in Lome was charged up, with pockets of Ghanaian fans cheering on, as the Stars started to dominate possession.
But Togo settled and pushed forward for the leveler; Emmanuel Adebayor found space in the penalty area of the Stars to connect from a free kick in the 77th minute.
Christian Atsu after a well worked move from the Ghanaian attack dashed into the box to toe-poke the winner with his weaker foot.
Then, it was all Togo in the dying embers of the game as they surged forward but failed to go past the defence men of Ghana as they stood resolute and composed to claim the win.
