A game of two halves will best describe the AFCON 2015 qualifier game between the Black Stars and their Guinean counterparts played on Saturday night at the Stade Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
Guinea, playing in their newly adopted home grounds due to issues of Ebola in Conakry virtually went to sleep in the first half, allowing the Black Stars room to dominate proceedings.
Ghana played in buoyant mood, making incursions down the wide areas with Abdul Baba Rahman and Harrison Afful troubling the lateral defenders with their pace and trickery.
But the opener came through the middle courtesy Skipper Asamaoh Gyan’s left footed finish after he was put through by Jordan Ayew in the 28th minute.
Guinea’s attempt to build attacks proved futile as their front men were short of options in front of goal.
Game ended 1-0 in favor of the visitors at the interval.
Guinea made amends in the second half with a much improved performance which kept the Black Stars on the back foot. They switched to a much more attacking approach which caused numerous problems for the backline of Ghana.
Captain Ibrahima Traore delivered a quality finish on the 81st minute mark, when he cut through the right side of the Ghanaian defence to deliver a powerful shot which beat Stephen Adams at his far post. It was a well-deserved equaliser for the host and was much welcomed by the few fans in the Stadium.
The Guineans continued to pour men forward and almost paid the price when substitute, Mubarak Wakaso’s shot almost beat the goalkeeper at his far post; Naby Yattara saved brilliantly, diving to his left to keep it out.
Ghana lead Group E with 5 points, Guinea climb into 2nd position after securing a point from the game, the return fixture will be played in Tamale on Wednesday.
