Nigeria became the first African country to qualify for next year's World Cup in Brazil after a 2-0 home win over Ethiopia in Calabar. The African champions, Nigeria booked a qualification ticket after a 4 – 1 aggregate playoff victory over Ethiopia.
The Super Eagles went into the game with a 2 – 1 advantage over the Ethiopians. Victor Moses converted a 20th minute penalty and Victor Obinna added the second from a free kick in the 82nd-minute.
Nigeria thus qualifies for their fifth World Cup, having appeared in the mundial on four occasions.
Other playoff games between Senegal v Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso v Algeria, Tunisia v Cameroon and Ghana against Egypt will be decided in the next days.
