Cape Verdians' dreams of making a fairytale appearance at the largest football mundial has come to a painful end after FIFA kicked out the West African nation.
The development came up after the FIFA Disciplinary Committee took the "decision to sanction the Cape Verdean Football Association (FCF) for fielding an ineligible player in the preliminary competition match for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ between Tunisia and the Cape Verde Islands on 7 September 2013."
Fernado Varela is the player who was found to be ineligible for the game after Tunisia complained to FIFA. The disciplinary committee have now put Tunisia in their stead.
Tunisia's inclusion now means that Egpyt will be included in the countries to vie for the qualifying place for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Per the latest FIFA rankings, the top five teams to be placed in Pot 1 are Ivory Coast, Ghana, Algeria, Nigeria and Tunisia.
Pot 2 will have Ethiopia, Egypt, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Cameroon.
In related news, Congo are also contesting that Niger fielded an unqualified player. This means that Congo can also qualify ahead of Burkina Faso if their protest is upheld.
