Ghana suffered defeat in their 2014 African Womens’s Championship opener as Horiya Affak’s scored late to hand Algeria a 1-0 victory in their Group B clash in the Independence Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia.

Yusif Basigi’s side had several efforts on goal, but in Kahina- Algeria found a keeper in excellent form as together with her defence thwarted efforts from the Ghanaians.

The Queens made a lively start as the second half got underway but again profligacy in front of goal were their let down.

But it was Algeria who made the breakthrough with 3 minutes to time when they exposed the Ghanaian defence, Naima Bouhani’s cross found Horiya Affak, who found space in the box to head home the winner.

The Queens tried to respond with incursions but it mattered little as the Algerians held on to claim a vital victory.

The Black Queens will need a win in their next game to stand a chance of qualifying to the next stage of the competition, they will face Cameroon on Wednesday.
