Chairman of the Dansoman Keep Fit Club (DKFC), Daniel Welbeck, has said that the 27th Accra Milo Marathon has been the best yet organised.
The organisation of the annual event, which sees thousands of athletes from all over Ghana and outside Ghana, was stepped up a notch in the 2013 edition and saw very few glitches.
Praising the sponsors, Nestle Milo, and organisers, Events EXP, Mr. Welbeck acknowledged that the good organisation made a telling effect on the competition itself.
"Looking at the level of competition this year, it's been very good. For the level of preparation, it has been so well done that it has made a huge impact on this year's event."
Two athletes, the male and female winners, will represent Ghana at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Mr. Welbeck believes that with the right setups in place, they can battle for honours.
"Obviously, it's always about time. When you look at the times clocked at this event and compare them to the international competitions, I believe with the help of sponsors and organisers, our athletes can do well."
After the 26th edition of the Accra Milo Marathon, plans were put in place to organise mini marathons in every region of Ghana. Mr. Welbeck admits that this has not been achieved but says that efforts are being made to see this to fruition in subsequent events.
"The expansion has not been to the level that we want. All the same, we were able to have some mini marathons in some regions to get some participants in addition to the Accra event. We're still working at it and we hope to improve the situation come 2014."
